Are you a living encyclopedia for pop culture and all things geeky? Looking to win street cred and some gift cards? Then Geeks Who Drink is for you. This Seattle taphouse trivia night has swept the nation and Easy Monkey is proud to host our own edition every Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. If you’ve never gone before or have participated in the past, you may be wondering what strategies you can use to win. Here are some tips to get you started.
Assemble an All-Star Geek Team
As the old man in The Legend of Zelda would say, “It’s dangerous to go alone.” You may not have the Master Sword, but you can take your friends with you. Players can still participate if they arrive solo, but for the best odds at winning you’ll want to curate a team of the most sharp-witted geeks you know. Recruit friends with different specialties, ranging from television and movies to music and video games. Chemistry is important, as well. Maybe trade in that Tony Stark who doesn’t play well with others for a team-player akin to Captain America. Remember – you’re not competing against your teammates.
Keep a Clear Mind
Trivia and beer go hand-in-hand. But if you’re in it to win it you’ll want to keep your wits about you. Instead of going for that third beer, think about opting for some brain food instead. Easy Monkey has you covered with everything from French dips to French fries. Grab some humus and veggies to share with your teammates. Maybe those carrots will even boost your eyesight in the visual round. Save those extra beers for your celebration after.
Bust Out Your Best Nostalgia Playlists
Hits of the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s are bound to come up in one of the rounds. You may think you’re a lexicon of pop hits, but it doesn’t hurt to double-check yourself. Have you been singing Johnny Nash’s classic hit as “I can see clearly now; Lorraine is gone?” Streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music have a wealth of playlists that span the decades of popular music. If there’s a particular era or genre that’s a blind spot for you, now’s a great time to get up to speed.
Practice Makes Perfect
Above all else, the best way to prepare is to experience Geeks Who Drink for yourself. Get a feel for the flow of the evening and questions being asked. You might not win your first time through, but you’ll be ready to conquer when you return the next week. The more times you play, the more you’ll get the hang of it. It won’t be long before you’re proclaimed the geekiest drinker of them all.
