Geeks Who Drink: Seattle Taphouse Trivia

Are you a living encyclopedia for pop culture and all things geeky? Looking to win street cred and some gift cards? Then Geeks Who Drink is for you. This Seattle taphouse trivia night has swept the nation and Easy Monkey is proud to host our own edition every Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. If you’ve never gone before or have participated in the past, you may be wondering what strategies you can use to win. Here are some tips to get you started.

Assemble an All-Star Geek Team

As the old man in The Legend of Zelda would say, “It’s dangerous to go alone.” You may not have the Master Sword, but you can take your friends with you. Players can still participate if they arrive solo, but for the best odds at winning you’ll want to curate a team of the most sharp-witted geeks you know. Recruit friends with different specialties, ranging from television and movies to music and video games. Chemistry is important, as well. Maybe trade in that Tony Stark who doesn’t play well with others for a team-player akin to Captain America. Remember – you’re not competing against your teammates.

Keep a Clear Mind

Trivia and beer go hand-in-hand. But if you’re in it to win it you’ll want to keep your wits about you. Instead of going for that third beer, think about opting for some brain food instead. Easy Monkey has you covered with everything from French dips to French fries. Grab some humus and veggies to share with your teammates. Maybe those carrots will even boost your eyesight in the visual round. Save those extra beers for your celebration after.

Bust Out Your Best Nostalgia Playlists

Hits of the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s are bound to come up in one of the rounds. You may think you’re a lexicon of pop hits, but it doesn’t hurt to double-check yourself. Have you been singing Johnny Nash’s classic hit as “I can see clearly now; Lorraine is gone?” Streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music have a wealth of playlists that span the decades of popular music. If there’s a particular era or genre that’s a blind spot for you, now’s a great time to get up to speed.

Practice Makes Perfect

Above all else, the best way to prepare is to experience Geeks Who Drink for yourself. Get a feel for the flow of the evening and questions being asked. You might not win your first time through, but you’ll be ready to conquer when you return the next week. The more times you play, the more you’ll get the hang of it. It won’t be long before you’re proclaimed the geekiest drinker of them all.

5 Signs You’re Ready for Seattle’s Fall Beers & Ciders

Autumn is in the air.

Leaves are changing color and starting to fall. Halloween costumes are in the stores, and just about every food and drink on the shelves is coming out in festive pumpkin flavors. So, we decided to talk about what this season looks like when it comes to your favorite restaurants and breweries. Are you ready to fall-ify your microbrew lineup?

You’re ready for some fall microbrews if:

  • You’ve had one too many pumpkin spice lattes or pumpkin muffins at work. Just the smell of pumpkin is starting to get on your nerves. So, we suggest exchanging “pumpkin spice everything” for a tall glass of Seattle Cider’s Oaked Maple at Easy Monkey Taphouse. This festive fall cider is fermented with toasted oak chips, and subtly sweetened with the best maple syrup from Vermont. Peace out, pumpkin spice.
  • You’ve spent the day visiting your favorite corn maze, picking pumpkins and drinking apple cider with the kids. That’s great, but at the end of the day, it may be time to turn in that kid-friendly apple cider for a cold mug of Seattle Cider’s limited-edition Three Pepper, infused with the flavors of jalapeno and habanero. You deserve some adult beverages for being such a good chauffeur/host for all the kid-friendly fall activities that pop up around Washington this time of year!
  • Speaking of the kids: they have already started talking about their epic Christmas list, and all of the things that they are hoping to get when Santa comes to town. All you can think about is having to trudge out of your home at a ridiculous hour on Black Friday to try to get a steal of a deal to make their Christmas extra merry. We suggest enjoying a glass of Winter Wingman beer at Easy Monkey Taphouse. You know, to help relax the rush of fall while still paying respects to the impending winter. This feels like a great plan, to us. Notes of pumpkin, cinnamon, and nutmeg in every sip, it’s a merry mash-up, if we do say so ourselves.
  • You’ve been putting your garden to bed after a full season of harvesting a great bounty of summer treats. It’s hard work that needs to be done to make sure that your garden will be ready come the spring, but boy, can it create a hearty thirst. You deserve a reward: Blackberry Ale is ready to satisfy that thirst while reminding you of a good harvest. It’s a unique, award-winning blend that’s available year ‘round, so if you’re wanting to ignore the fall festivities for a bit, come have a glass of Blackberry Ale and reflect on the great summer of 2016.
  • You woke up cold, and you’re ready to have a satisfying breakfast on a busy fall morning. You’ll probably choose to go with a nice hot bowl of oatmeal to help make you feel fuller longer, and warm you up from the inside out. That’s a fantastic plan… but after working all day (we’re pretty positive it was a long and trying day, at that) you should reach for a Chocolate Oatmeal Stout and savor the rich hearty flavor. But maybe only one for you… the creamy chocolate and oat flavors pack a whopping 9.0% ABV, so you’ll be toasty warm when you reach the bottom of the glass.

We knew these Seattle fall microbrews are calling your name. Be more adventurous this autumn and check out all of the microbrews and ciders that we offer at Easy Monkey Taphouse. We promise that you’ll find a microbrew, wine, or cider that suits your taste buds.

Social Media for Social Good

Did you know when you check-in on Facebook every time you visit Easy Monkey that we’ll make a donation on your behalf? We partner with local and international non-profits every month that enable us to make a donation based off the amount of Facebook check-ins we received.

In October, we partnered with Bright Pink where every six Facebook check-ins resulted in a breast cancer and ovarian assessment test being provided to someone in need. We had 102 check-ins, so 17 tests were able to be donated. Thank you!

This month, we are working with The Hunger Site. Every time you check-in, a meal for a family of four is donated. The great thing is that meal is going to Burmese refugees.

11-Nov_Reach_Promo1_16x9

How It Works:

Every time you come into Easy Monkey, pull out your mobile phone and click the check-in button in the top right corner. Not sure how to do this? Just ask us for help!

You can check-in every time you come in, even if you visit us twice in the same week or even the same day! Every time you check-in, a meal will be donated.

About the Cause:

Like many Thai towns along the Thailand-Burma border, Mae Sot is a sanctuary for Burmese refugees in their flight from the upheaval of civil war in their own country. Tens of thousands of Karen and other Burmese minorities subsist on the fringes of the Thai economy and await a brighter future. For 20 years, the Mae Tao Clinic has provided life-saving care to Burma’s displaced population, especially its children.

There are 286,000 Burmese migrants living in the Tak province, and the overwhelming majority are under the age of 19. Parents often send their children to Thailand in effort to further their education and avoid the risks of unsafe child labor. Boarding houses give these children a stable environment in which to continue their education, either in Thai schools or migrant learning centers. However, there is not enough consistent donor support for the growing number of boarding houses, apart from Mae Tao Clinic’s Dry Food Programme (DFP), which provides the children with dry food rations, and hygiene and bedding supplies.

The DFP provides the primary nourishment for 3,000 migrant students via rice, tin fish, oil, yellow beans, salt, and sweet powder. Without these essential food donations, many boarding houses would be unable to provide for the children.
